Guy A. Martinelli
Accolade Plastics and Chemical Associates
Inducted 2000
During his 50-plus-year career in the plastics industry, Guy Martinelli (1918 – 2007) served as a president at Sylvan Plastics, Dimensional Pigments, and American Polymers before founding Accolade Plastics and Chemical Associates – consultants in the area of mergers and acquisitions. He was also an active volunteer for the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), joining the organization in 1950.
He left to continue his plastics career shortly after World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and became a major. Following the war, he joined Sylvan Plastics in New York, a maker of urea formaldehyde molding compounds. Martinelli would then move up and become president of Sylvan Plastics. In 1961, he bought a share of Dimensional Pigments Inc., which made synthetic pearlescent pigments in Bayonne, N.J. After that company was sold, he stayed as manager, then retired early in 1974. He then bought a stake in a material supplier, compounder American Polymers Inc. of Paterson, N.J. In 1976, Martinelli created a consulting firm, Accolade Plastics & Chemical Associates, in Red Bank, N.J.
Martinelli held many administrative positions in industry organizations. He served as President of the SPE in 1964. He was instrumental in instituting key beneficial changes to the Society’s Annual Technical Conference format. He also founded SPE’s Polymer Modifiers & Additives Division. Martinelli also served as Chairman of the Plastics Institute of America (PIA) and was a guiding force in expanding their programs. He served as President of the Plastics Pioneers Association (PPA) in 1989 and helped to establish a scholarship fund for students seeking careers in plastics.
