Charles Condit (1915 – ) dedicated his entire adult life to the plastics industry, playing a major organizational role in the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI, now PLASTICS). He was born in Lima, Ohio, in 1915 and received a degree in chemistry from Jackson Junior College in Jackson, Michigan. He joined SPI in 1942 when the entire staff numbered only four people. During his three decades at SPI, he was immersed in the constantly evolving issues and markets for plastics and the growing activities of society.
Early in his career, Condit administered the publication of the first edition of the SPI Plastics Engineering Handbook. He was responsible for forming, administering, and guiding several key SPI operating units and committees. He was the original organizer and director of the National Plastics Conference, the major technical forum co-located with SPI’s National Plastics Exposition. Condit served many years as the plastics industry’s representative to the International Standards Organization (ISO). There, he held committee chairmanships and contributed significantly to developing procedures and methods for the plastics industry that govern worldwide industry practices today. He also promulgated several commercial standards through the Department of Commerce.
Charles Condit’s service to SPI contributed significantly to the organization’s development, growth, and effectiveness. His ambassadorial stewardship during the industry’s ever-changing and evolving history contributed substantially to the growth of the plastics industry.
