Clare E. Bacon (1913 – 1977) was an outstanding leader in the plastics industry. His extraordinary efforts and devotion to development of glass reinforcement processes and applications did much to make glass fiber reinforced plastics a major segment of the plastics industry then and today.
He joined Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. in 1942 as the company’s first research and development manager for reinforced plastics. He became involved in the early development of fibrous glass products and processes. From 1955 to 1964, he served as market development manager and new end-use sales manager for reinforced plastics.
From 1964 to 1971, he was manager of glass fiber reinforced market development and sales to the appliance and equipment markets. He pioneered many of the applications in production today and pursued new end uses. Subsequently, many of Bacon’s processes, materials, and tooling changes are standards of the industry today.
In 1972, he served as manager of plastics industry relations for the textile and industrial operating divisions of Owens-Corning. He was responsible for liaising with industry associations in developing fire, safety, and health standards as well as environmental control activities.
For over 30 years, he was a constant and powerful force in developing and applying reinforced plastic materials. He worked for progress, creativity, and excellence.
