Molly Garber’s interest in engineering was sparked by her personal experience with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and her dedication to improving lives through medical innovation. Although she initially pursued biomedical engineering, her academic focus evolved upon discovering the field of plastics engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Stout. She was drawn to the discipline’s diverse applications, particularly in the realms of healthcare and sustainable materials, and subsequently began pursuing a dual degree in Plastics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Through her academic and research endeavors, Ms. Garber has cultivated a comprehensive understanding of materials science. As a research assistant, she is currently engaged in a project examining the degradability of polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic with significant potential for environmental sustainability. Her work investigates the breakdown of biodegradable polymers under varying environmental conditions—insights that are critical to advancing eco-friendly packaging technologies. Her consistent inclusion on the Dean’s List since Fall 2023 underscores her dedication to scholarly excellence.
Beyond her academic achievements, Ms. Garber has demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership and community engagement. In her capacity as a Resident Advisor, she supports fellow students, fosters inclusive residential communities, and refines her communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. Additionally, she has contributed as a STEAM Camp Counselor, introducing middle school students to foundational STEM concepts. Motivated by the mentorship she received during her formative years, she is especially dedicated to encouraging young girls to pursue careers in science and engineering.
In the near term, Molly aims to continue her research into sustainable polymers, gain hands-on industry experience, and deepen her technical expertise in materials development and design. Over the long term, she aspires to contribute to medical device innovation for individuals affected by POTS and to assume a leadership role in the plastics industry, developing solutions that are both technologically advanced and environmentally responsible.
