Achilles Steinbok

University of Massachusetts Lowell

Plastics Hall of Fame Equipment Council Scholarship Recipient
University of Massachusetts Lowell
Junior, Plastics Engineering
Home: Medford, MA

Achilles Steinbok is a determined and thoughtful student currently pursuing a degree in Plastics Engineering. When he began university as an undeclared engineering major, he took time to explore various disciplines—sitting in on classes, speaking with professors, and researching career paths—before discovering a strong connection to Plastics Engineering. The field’s wide-ranging applications, from sustainability to biomedical innovation, as well as the blend of chemical and mechanical principles, resonated deeply with him.

Achilles takes full financial responsibility for his education. His family, though supportive, faces significant financial hardship, and he is often torn between working to afford tuition and fully immersing himself in his education. While he has worked 10–20 hours per week during past semesters, he recognizes the impact this has had on both academic performance and personal well-being. Scholarship support is crucial in helping him continue his studies with the focus and balance needed to thrive.

Professionally, Achilles has gained valuable experience in both academic research and industry. He has contributed as an undergraduate research assistant at his university and completed a seven-month co-op at Medtronic’s extrusion division. In both settings, he supported process development and optimization across a variety of extrusion materials and methods, while also gaining exposure to injection molding, tooling, and product assembly.

Achilles remains excited about the possibilities within plastics engineering and is motivated by the opportunity to make a difference, whether through developing biodegradable materials or improving everyday products. Though he’s still exploring his exact path, his commitment to using his skills for the betterment of others is unwavering.
