Walter Haine (1913 – 1967) was an American chemical engineer and a pioneer in developing material and manufacturing technologies associated with polyolefin plastics, especially for flexible polyethylene formulations.
He spent most of his professional career working for the Union Carbide Corporation, first as a chemical engineer and then as a polyethylene market manager. His professional career at Union Carbide was from 1947 until 1966. Throughout that time, he was a prolific inventor, earning dozens of United States and International patents, all assigned to Union Carbide. The technologies he developed included polyolefin formulations, additives, and manufacturing processes for polyolefins.
He developed novel extrusion technologies for the production of polyethylene films, polyethylene coatings, non-blocking polyethylene compositions, heat-sealing techniques for polyethylene laminates, processes for powdering polyethylene, and methods for improving and controlling the degree of adhesion of polyethylene coatings for paper.
