Robert Barr (1941 – ) is an engineer best known for his developments associated with advanced plasticating screw designs for thermoplastic processing, including an early barrier screw design patented in 1970.
Barr’s screw design background started while he was working as a development engineer for the Hartig Division of Midland Ross Corporation, a leading extruder manufacturer in New Jersey. He left Hartig Corporation to form Barr Polymer Systems Corporation in 1972. The primary focus of this company was designing and manufacturing extruders and blow molding machines. This company was a marketing and engineering success, and it was acquired by the Uniloy Division of Hoover Ball and Bearing Company in 1974. Uniloy retained Barr as their Technical Director.
In 1976 Barr founded Robert Barr, Corporation, a plasticating screw manufacturing company. With a patent on a new barrier screw design, the BARR 2 screw, the company began marketing and designing plasticating screws for all plastics processes. Over the next decade, the company developed other plasticating screw designs, including the BARR ET screw, which was released commercially in 1983.
In 2002, the company developed and patented the VBET screw, a highly efficient screw design. In addition, Barr has developed several new types of polymer mixing sections, such as the Fluxion mixing section. The company has received many other patents over the years for screw designs, mixers, and metering pumps. Since Barr founded his company in 1976, his main focus and commitment to the plastic industry has been to maximize machine efficiency and supply the highest quality product. Robert Barr retired as president in 2004 and became chairman of the company.
