George W. (Bill) Knight was a trailblazing polymer scientist whose work fundamentally reshaped the global polyethylene industry, elevating The Dow Chemical Company’s position as a technological leader. Over a distinguished 35-year career, Knight led innovations that ushered in two major revolutions in polyethylene product development: Ziegler-Natta catalyzed linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and metallocene-catalyzed polyolefins.
Knight joined Dow’s Polyethylene R&D group in 1961 after earning a master’s degree in biochemistry from Florida State University. He worked as a chemistry instructor at Abilene Christian University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Early in his Dow career, he played a key role in the development of DOWLEX ® linear low density polyethylene, which was launched in 1979. These materials quickly set industry benchmarks for packaging, health, and hygiene applications—helping establish a multi-billion-dollar product franchise for Dow.
When metallocene catalysts emerged in the early 1990s, Knight co-led the development of Dow’s new generation of high-performance polyolefins. His work directly led to the commercialization of elite product families, including ENGAGE® polyolefin elastomers, AFFINITY® plastomers, and ELITE® enhanced polyethylene. These resins remain the cornerstone of Dow’s Specialty Plastics and Packaging business, which has generated more than $4 billion in annual earnings in recent years.
His legacy matched Knight’s technical contributions as a mentor and educator. As a Research Fellow—the highest-ranking technical role at Dow—he trained and influenced several generations of scientists, many of whom went on to become key innovators in the plastics industry.
With over 55 patents and more than 50 publications, Bill Knight’s career exemplifies scientific excellence, visionary leadership, and a lasting dedication to innovation, with a profound impact on product performance and sustainability. His legacy continues to inspire engineers and researchers worldwide.
