Bürkle, Dr. Erwin

Dr.-Ing. Erwin Bürkle (1942–2024) was an internationally respected pioneer in injection molding and cleanroom technologies whose career spanned more than four decades at KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH. Known for his deep technical expertise and visionary thinking, Dr. Bürkle played a central role in shaping modern plastics processing and was one of the field’s most important bridge-builders between science and industry.

After earning his engineering degree from the Technical University of Munich and completing his doctorate at RWTH Aachen, Dr. Bürkle joined KraussMaffei in the early 1970s. He steadily advanced through technical and leadership roles there, ultimately serving as Head of Predevelopment. In this role, he led strategic market research and served as a key liaison for R&D with academic and institutional partners.

Dr. Bürkle’s contributions to plastics technology were groundbreaking. He was instrumental in developing several advanced processing techniques, including the SkinForm surface finishing process and the IMC (Injection Molding Compounder) technology. His innovations in plasticizing systems and the integration of process technologies have had a lasting global impact.

Throughout his career, he held over 50 patents, including critical developments in backflow valves, thermoforming of laminated parts, Thinxomolding for metallic materials, and heated mold tools still used today. He authored or co-authored over 40 publications and technical articles, many of which were for Carl Hanser Verlag.

Dr. Bürkle also made significant contributions to industry organizations, serving in leadership roles within the VDI (Association of German Engineers) and VDMA, as well as on the advisory boards of leading plastics research institutions, including IKV Aachen and SKZ Würzburg.

His achievements earned him some of the industry’s most prestigious awards, including the Dr. Richard-Escales-Preis, the VDI-K-Würfel, and the Georg-Menges-Prize.
