Park, Chul

Dr. Chul B. Park, Distinguished Professor at the University of Toronto, is internationally recognized as a leading expert in microcellular plastics and foaming technologies. Over the course of more than three decades, Dr. Park has advanced the science and industrial applications of polymer foaming, particularly through innovations in microcellular and supercritical fluid technologies. His groundbreaking research has enabled more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly manufacturing practices across the automotive, electronics, insulation, and footwear sectors.

During his doctoral research at MIT, Dr. Park co-invented the first-generation MuCell® injection molding and extrusion technologies. These innovations have revolutionized plastic manufacturing by reducing material use, improving product performance, and minimizing environmental impact. His pioneering work on using supercritical CO₂ as a sustainable blowing agent significantly contributed to the elimination of ozone-depleting substances in insulation foam production.

At the University of Toronto, he founded the Microcellular Plastics Manufacturing Laboratory, now a globally recognized center of excellence in polymer research. He has mentored over 300 researchers, including nearly 100 PhD students, and secured more than CA$50 million in research funding. His collaborations with industry partners have led to numerous patented technologies, including open-cell recyclable foams, rotomolded foams, and graphene-based nanocomposites. Many innovations have been successfully commercialized and licensed worldwide, from footwear giants like Crocs to global electronics and materials companies.

With a portfolio of more than 40 patents and over 1,200 scientific publications, Dr. Park’s influence is unmatched. He is a highly sought-after speaker, having delivered more than 2,000 presentations. He has served in key roles with professional organizations, including the Society of Plastics Engineers and the Polymer Processing Society. His contributions have earned him prestigious honors, including the James L. White Innovation Award and fellowships in Canada’s and Korea’s most distinguished science academies.

Dr. Park’s work has bridged academic research and industrial innovation, reshaping the plastics industry and driving forward more sustainable and advanced manufacturing practices worldwide.
